Recommend a village/market town 2 hrs from London
|
Thinking of driving out on Sunday with the missus to a nice village or market town no further than a 2 hr drive from London. Must have some nice pubs for lunch and shops or markets to have a look around.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Been looking around the South Downs but nothing's jumped out at me yet.
Obliged.

Dorset, M3, M27. Lots of market towns here, villages, nice beaches.

Dagenham has a Sunday market , grab a pint in the ship and shovel or for some cultural elightement either the thatched house or the brewery tap have both been taken over by our Nigerian friends.

Treat the missus to lunch at the Lavenham Swan (you'll need to book in advance) and just up the road is the market town of Sudbury.

Rye in Sussex is a lovely small town. Proper "Great Britain." Not too much chain-store. Quirky shops. Good pubs, food and ale. And churches. Romantic place if you're looking to impress your lady. And you may see Paul McCartney.

Another shout for Lavenham.
The Great House is fantastic if you like the French classics. Great cheese trolley as well...

Thanks for the suggestions.
My Ilford dwelling days are long behind me, so we'll be travelling from SE London (Blackheath/Lewisham way).

Ely??
Had to work there for a few years. Fantastic cathedral, but the rest was dire. Pretty bleak landscape.
Cambridge, where I actually lived, was much better. But that's not a village/market town.
